Referral Group Description

The Dr. John H. Kreeft Headache Clinic is dedicated to the diagnosis and management of patients with complicated headache or facial pain problems. The clinic is located in Zone E, Level 5 of Victoria Hospital. Patients must be at least 18 years old to be seen in the clinic.

The Clinic participates in clinical trials for the prevention and treatment of headache. The treatment of complicated headaches and facial pain requires a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic measures. The initial team that assesses patients with complicated headache consists of a nurse, who reviews the patient's history and a neurologist who analyses the history with the nurse and then examines the patient and then with the patient agrees upon an initial diagnostic and therapeutic plan.

Some patients may require referral to specialists in physical medicine, neurosurgeons, psychologists or anaesthetists with special expertise in pain treatment. Because of the numbers of patients seen and the complexity of trials of medications, there must be a close working relationship between the patient, his/her primary care physician and the clinic.

Referrals can be made to the clinic by a patient's family doctor or by other specialists, if the family doctor agrees with the referral and is willing to participate in the program. There is a wait of 22-24 months to be seen in the clinic and we are therefore unable to accommodate urgent referrals.
