Clinical Neurological Sciences - Drs. Burneo and Steven
partner with Peru in Epilepsy

As part of an ongoing project with Perú, Drs Jorge Burneo and David Steven, Associate Professors of Neurology and neurosurgery respectivey, have recently travelled to Perú.

The project started in 2008, when Dr Jorge Burneo obtained a grant from the North American Commission from the International League Against Epilepsy, through the program called: "Partnership of Epilepsy Centers in the Americas (PECA)". During that year Dr Burneo gave a workshop on video-EEG and this year Drs Burneo and Steven gave a workshop on Epilepsy Surgery, among other activities at different institutions in Lima. In the interim, Drs Burneo and Steven welcomed neurologists and neurosurgeons for observerships at LHSC. The goal of the project is to develop an epilepsy program in Lima, Perú.

Perú has close to 30 million people, with an incidence and prevalence of epilepsy that triple the ones in Canada. Despite the large population and the amount of people with epilepsy, the country does not have an epilepsy program.
